A Robust and Efficient Three-Layered Dialogue Component for a Speech-to-Speech Translation System

    Get PDF
We present the dialogue component of the speech-to-speech translation system VERBMOBIL. In contrast to conventional dialogue systems it mediates the dialogue while processing maximally 50% of the dialogue in depth. Special requirements like robustness and efficiency lead to a 3-layered hybrid architecture for the dialogue module, using statistics, an automaton and a planner. A dialogue memory is constructed incrementally.Comment: Postscript file, compressed and uuencoded, 15 pages, to appear in Proceedings of EACL-95, Dublin

Some ideas for the automatic acquisition of dialogue structure

    Get PDF
We are reporting on some initial results on the automatic acquisition of plan operators for a plan recognizer. The operators are derived from the Verbmobil corpus of negotiation dialogues hand-annotated with dialogue acts. The corpus is pre-classified and a set of plan operators is derived for every class. The plan operators are then tested on a set of unseen data. We also show some initial results

    Plan recognition in verbmobil

Verbmobil, a speech to speech translation system, poses new and challenging tasks for a dialogue component. We present a part of the dialogue component of verbmobil: a robust plan recognizer that processes all of the over 200 dialogues of the verbmobil corpus. The recognizer currently handles unexpected sequences of input, and will in the future deal with multiple input, hypotheses, and incomplete input

Hybrid discourse modeling and summarization for a speech-to-speech translation system

The thesis discusses two parts of the speech-to-speech translation system VerbMobil: the dialogue model and one of its applications, multilingual summary generation. In connection with the dialogue model, two topics are of special interest: (a) the use of a default unification operation called overlay as the fundamental operation for dialogue management; and (b) an intentional model that is able to describe intentions in dialogue on five levels in a language-independent way. Besides the actual generation algorithm developed, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the summarization functionality. In addition to precision and recall, a new characterization - confabulation - is defined that provides a more precise understanding of the performance of complex natural language processing systems.

The Approach to the Thermodynamic Limit in Lattice QCD at \mu\neq0

    Get PDF
The expectation value of the complex phase factor of the fermion determinant is computed to leading order in the pp-expansion of the chiral Lagrangian. The computation is valid for μ<mπ/2\mu<m_\pi/2 and determines the dependence of the sign problem on the volume and on the geometric shape of the volume. In the thermodynamic limit with Li L_i \to \infty at fixed temperature 1/L01/L_0, the average phase factor vanishes. In the low temperature limit where Li/L0L_i/L_0 is fixed as LiL_i becomes large the average phase factor approaches one. The results for a finite volume compare well with lattice results obtained by Allton {\it et al}.. After taking appropriate limits, we reproduce previously derived results for the ϵ\epsilon-regime and for 1-dimensional QCD. The distribution of the phase itself is also computed.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Treatment of incomplete dialogues in a speech-to-speech translation system

    Get PDF
For the speech-to-speech translation system verbmobil the dialogue component has the task of providing contextual information for other verbmobil subcomponents and to follow the flow of the dialogue. Since verbmobil operates on demand, only parts of the dialogue are processed using syntactic and semantic knowledge. Therefore, robustness with respect to incomplete structures is a basic requirement. We show the performance of the statistic prediction module and the planning module under such conditions

    HUMAN: Hierarchical Universal Modular ANnotator

A lot of real-world phenomena are complex and cannot be captured by single task annotations. This causes a need for subsequent annotations, with interdependent questions and answers describing the nature of the subject at hand. Even in the case a phenomenon is easily captured by a single task, the high specialisation of most annotation tools can result in having to switch to another tool if the task only slightly changes. We introduce HUMAN, a novel web-based annotation tool that addresses the above problems by a) covering a variety of annotation tasks on both textual and image data, and b) the usage of an internal deterministic state machine, allowing the researcher to chain different annotation tasks in an interdependent manner. Further, the modular nature of the tool makes it easy to define new annotation tasks and integrate machine learning algorithms e.g., for active learning. HUMAN comes with an easy-to-use graphical user interface that simplifies the annotation task and management.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, EMNLP - Demonstrations 202
